It was first called "Community Chest" when it was established in 1927. It then became the United Fund in 1957 and the United Way of Danville Area in 1978.

The United Way of Danville Area is governed by a board of directors from the local community elected at the United Way of Danville Area annual meeting. United Way of Danville Area is a member in good standing of the United Way of America. This means that we meet rigorous membership standards that focus on governance, ethics, financial, management, and general operations. United Way of Danville Area pays dues of 1% annually (e.g., $9,000.00 from a $900,000.00 local campaign). From this amount, we receive a rebate of flex credits back from UWA that can be applied for training opportunities at UWA. We also benefit from the research, best practices, networking, and other materials provided by UWA.
