Danville Illinois has a rich history dating back to when the city was founded in 1827. It was named after Dan Beckwith who donated about 20 acres that the city rests on today. In the late 19th century Danville thrived on its coal mines and once had the record of the the number one coal producer in Illinois. The coal mines have since closed and are now lakes.

Many famous people have close connections to Danville. Abraham Lincoln practiced law here from 1841 to 1859 and gave many speeches on the balcony of Dr. William E. Fithian. Dick and Jerry Van Dyke as well as astronaut, Joe Tanner are among many famous people who came from Danville.
